Yorkshire's walking terrain is among the most varied in England. The Yorkshire Dales National Park fills the west with limestone dales, thundering waterfalls — Aysgarth Falls, Hardraw Force — hay meadows alive with wildflowers in summer and the dry stone walls that define almost every view. Swaledale and Wensleydale cut long, pastoral corridors through the hills where paths follow rivers and ancient green lanes between stone-built villages.
To the east, the North York Moors National Park unfolds across some of the largest tracts of heather moorland in England, turning purple from August into September before the coast drops sharply to fossil beaches at Robin Hood's Bay and the towering clifftop ruin of Whitby Abbey. Nidderdale and the Howardian Hills add gentler, wooded walking between the two national parks. The Pennine Way threads through the Dales, and the Cleveland Way loops the moors and the coast. Dogs are welcome almost everywhere — but Yorkshire comes with conditions worth knowing before you set off.
