Somerset's walking terrain spans more extremes than almost any county its size. Exmoor National Park rises to heather moorland and high coastal cliffs — some of the tallest in England — and drops through ancient wooded combes to the sea. The Mendip Hills AONB offers a limestone plateau of caves, gorges and ancient woodland, including the dramatic rim of Cheddar Gorge and the hidden clefts of Ebbor Gorge. The Quantock Hills, the first AONB ever designated in England, run north to south through wooded deer valleys that feel unchanged for centuries.
Below them all spreads the Somerset Levels: a vast, flat wetland of rhynes and drainage ditches, raised drove roads and big open skies. Heavily gated with stiles crossing drainage channels, the Levels reward patience — and are among the best places in England for wetland birdlife. Winter transforms them into a mud-heavy but rewarding landscape. Spring and autumn are exceptional. The contrast with Exmoor's high ground — reachable in under an hour — makes Somerset one of Britain's most varied counties for dog walkers.
Luups knows about Exmoor's red deer before you reach the moor. Heather ridges, the Doone Valley, the Valley of Rocks — Exmoor rewards confident dogs and owners who don't mind a climb. Luups keeps tabs on red deer movement zones and routes clear of ground-nesting bird areas in spring. The coastal sections near Lynmouth are spectacular but demanding underfoot.
The cliff-top walk above Cheddar Gorge is open to dogs and unlike anything else in southern England. Ebbor Gorge offers shadier, quieter woodland. Luups routes the gorge rim carefully and flags cave and cliff-edge sections that require close control.
